What is the STIP?

The statewide transportation improvement program (STIP) is a transportation planning document developed by each state’s department of transportation and metropolitan planning organizations in the state. This document is generally a four year financial plan that lists all projects expected to be funded with federal dollars over the same period. The statewide transportation improvement program typically shows other contributions (state, local and private) put to-wards these projects as well. While many states have developed their own transportation planning documents in addition to the statewide transportation improvement program, the statewide transportation improvement program is the only short-term transportation planning document each state must produce for the federal government. Because the document shows planned transportation investment in the near future, it is a good marker of each state’s transportation infrastructure spending priorities.
