Planned Transportation Spending
An examination Pennsylvania’s 2009-2012 Statewide Transportation Improvement Program reveals that transit projects* *** account for the largest chunk of planned spending (33 percent). Bridge maintenance/replacement projects follow, comprising 28 percent of the STIP. Road maintenance/minor widening projects make up 20 percent of the planned expenditures. Projects categorized as “other”** and new road capacity projects each account for 6 percent of the spending. Safety projects make up 5 percent. Bicycle/pedestrian projects comprise 2 percent. Bridge capacity expansion projects and road or bridge projects with bicycle/pedestrian components (such as adding sidewalks when reconstructing a roadway) both make up less than 1 percent of the planned spending. share
