Planned Transportation Spending
An examination of Hawaii’s 2011-2014 Statewide Transportation Improvement Pro- gram reveals that transit projects account for the largest chunk of the planned spending (74 percent). The plan- ning and construction of a Honolulu light rail system accounts for $3.32 billion in transit expenditures, 88 per- cent of all transit projects. New road capacity projects account for 6 percent of the planned expenditures, bridge maintenance/replacement 5 percent, and road maintenance/minor widening projects also account for 5 percent. Projects classified as “other” make up 4 percent of the proposed spending. Safety projects comprise 3 percent of the STIP, and road or bridge projects that have bicycle/pedestrian components (such as adding side- walks when reconstructing a roadway) account for 2 percent of the spending. Bicycle/pedestrian projects make up 1 percent of the planning spending and no bridge capacity expansion projects were identified. share
